In and around 1998 community leaders met to harness the Wixom
community spirit and prepare plans to rebuild the Wixom of old.
Through numerous meetings and, with overwhelming public input
and support, the Wixom Village Center Area was born.
The Village Center Area District is intended to allow for the
development of a fully integrated, mixed use, pedestrian oriented
Village Center Area (VCA). The intent of the VCA District is
to minimize traffic congestion, infrastructure costs and environmental
degradation. It is based on a traditional neighborhood design
principles including:
Residential neighborhoods, with an emphasis
on making a more walkable community.
Housing
types and uses that are mixed and developed in close proximity
to one another.
Civic buildings and civic squares
for social activities, acting as landmarks, symbols and
focal points for community identity.
Recreation space
The location of
dwellings, shops and workplaces in close proximity to each
other
Preservation of open space
and natural areas.
Construction of Phase I is currently underway,
consisting mainly of commercial retail space, resitential
condominiums, the "Village Square", and renovations to the
fountain area between the Library and City Hall.
New information will be added as it becomes available.
